A report has been produced by reportlinker.com with the latest figures on mobile phone recycling in the UK.

The findings are that the UK is the most advanced and competitive market for mobile phone recycling with 8 million handsets being recycled last year –  twice as many as two years ago. The market place is becoming more competitive and consumers are more aware of the opportunities to recycle phones but are more focused on the financial benefits to their own pocket, rather than the benefits to the environment.

The report shows the latest figures and discusses the roles and motives of the various players within the mobile phone recycling chain.  Some interesting facts are:

  • Most handsets are now reused rather than scrapped
  • The destination of reused devices has changed with a lot now going to Hong Kong
  • Recycling volumes have changed due to SIM-only and longer contracts

The report also follows the handset through the value chain, discusses the role of mobile phone recycling specialists, non-profit organizations, non-telecoms retail partners and the mobile scrap specialist.
