The Gulf Times reports that the Ministry of Environment in Qtar has announced a proposal to engage the two mobile phone operators in the region to turn e-waste management into a recycling market.

The associate vice minister for environmental affairs, HE Rashed al-Kuwari, said the proposal was still in brainstorming levels but was expected to be endorsed later this year.  “Qtel has already announced earlier this month a project on e-waste management which is going to include mobile phones and we are holding meetings with Vodafone as well,” he said.

The Ministry of Environment is trying to encourage green solutions and incentives and wants to convince the two mobile phone operators to provide free services or minutes for all people who want and choose to dispose of their mobile phones responsibly.  This is good news for the mobile phone recycling market.

The aim is to turn e-waste into a beneficial market. “We want to engage both companies in the recycling of e-waste, which could turn into a very beneficial market”, al-Kuwari added.
