A Scottish charity is asking the public to donate their old mobile phones for recycling to raise money for community services.

The project is known as CAFE (Community Alcohol Free Environment) and provides activities for young people in Angus.  Over 20,000 young people under the age of 25 attend a year for leisure, culture, health, education, employment services and outdoor activities.  The aim is to keep young people off the streets.

Hamish Fairweather is organising the project which is struggling for funding.  The New Year is often a time when people are getting rid of their old phones as they may have received a new one for Christmas.   The charity wants to encourage people to donate their old phones to raise money.   Mr Fairweather says: “We will then recycle them and gain vital funding so we can continue our good work in Angus.  We, like a lot of charities, are finding funding harder and harder to source so we thought this was a novel way to raise some much-needed cash.

“Instead of asking for money we would like the Angus public to donate their old mobile phones which are sent down south where they are checked, repaired and then sold in developing countries. We only require the phone not the charger.”
