New Universal Charger May Increase Mobile Phone Recycling

Idapt is launching a new device called the i1 Eco which is an environmentally friendly universal charger.

The charger includes a USB port and a tip port with interchangeable tips which will enable it to handle over 4,000 devices including the iPhone, Blackberry, iPad, games consoles such as Sony’s PSP and the XBox, as well as GPS and Bluetooth gadgets.

The charger is made from recycled materials and meets Energy Star standards.  It features an auto-off system which automatically turns off the charger when its not in use and has a restart button to turn it back on as required.  No chemical paint has been used to make the charger, which means that it will be much easier to recycle in the future.  The dual charger means devices can be charged on the move through a car adaptor as well as at home.

It is hoped that the invent of this universal charger will aid rates of mobile phone recycling.  Currently, some mobile phone recycling sites require you to send your old charger in when selling your old phone.  In future, these old chargers will be redundant so there will be no need to send them in, thereby encouraging more people to sell their old mobiles as the process will be simpler.

The new charger is expected to be released in Spring 2011.
