New Mobile Phone Recycling Initiative in Asia

A new initiative to promote mobile phone recycling in Asia is being called Mobile Man.

Mobile Man was created in Singapore by Nokia and is a non-motorised robot made of used mobile phones and accessories. It weighs about 44 pounds and is about 6 feet tall.

Three Mobile Men have been made so far, and one of them is being used to raise awareness of mobile phone recycling by the postal service in Beijing. It is appearing at more than 40 post offices.  When people hand in their old mobile phones for recycling at the post offices, Nokia are giving away free movie tickets as an incentive and thank you.

People are being encouraged to put their old phones into designated envelopes before handing them in. They will then be given a receipt so that they can keep updated on the status of their old phone as it goes through the recycling process.  Some of the materials that can be recovered from the phone and be reused include plastic, nickel, copper, iron, and aluminum.

Nokia uses other ways to encourage people to recycle their old mobiles in Asia.  2 years ago they introduced automated touch screen kiosks where people can drop off their old phones.
